2012 Consortium Outstanding Student

Onuigbo named 2011-2012 UW MBA Macaulay A. Onuigbo, MD, has been named the 2012 University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium Outstanding Graduate. A May 2012 graduate, Onuigbo will be recognized May 19th at the MBA Celebration Reception immediately following the 2 pm commencement ceremony. The reception will be held in the UW-Eau Claire Davies Center Dulany Inn.
Onuigbo is vice chair in the Department of Nephrology, Mayo Health Systems in Eau Claire, WI where he is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology, and specializes in hypertension, chronic kidney disease management and dialysis, and transplantation medicine.
"I feel very fortunate to have had Mac in my classes," writes Dr. Jonathon Halbesleben, associate professor of management at the University of Alabama Culverhouse College of Commerce and the Healthcare South Chair of Health Care Management. Halbesleben, who also teaches in the UW MBA Consortium, had Onuigbo as a student. "Through his work in the Mayo Health System, Mac offers a unique perspective that draws other students in. His enthusiasm is unparalleled. He is truly deserving of this honor."
Onuigbo has already put the knowledge he has gained in the MBA program to good use. He has combined his interest in medicine with interests in information technology and healthcare delivery systems.
In February 2012, he applied for a patent for The CKD Express © Expert IT System, a computer system that aids in the management of chronic kidney disease. He developed the computer system and created a business plan for the new product as an assignment in Module 2 of the UW MBA Consortium program while working with a team of three other MBA students and with the assistance of his wife.
Onuigbo also is working with several of his Consortium MBA professors on a book project that addresses how to reengineer healthcare to make it more effective, efficient, and responsive. The book will include topics such as IT innovations and implementation, cost cutting and cost containment, and Accountable Care Organizations (ACO), a health care delivery model offering doctors and hospitals financial incentives to provide good quality care to an assigned population of patients while keeping down costs. |
